Flin Flon

Flin Flon is a mining town that has been a music town almost as long as it has had a mine. From Whitney-family concert halls to Carnegie Hall choir tours to a free August festival that now draws more than 9,000 entries, this border city on Precambrian rock is one of the densest arts communities in northern Manitoba.

A century of music on the shield

The Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting company did not only pour nickel. It built a town people would stay in — halls, bands, and amateur theatre included. Local memory still points to Jean Young (Neil Young’s grandmother) accompanying a young Jon Vickers in The Pirates of Penzance. The Flin Flon Community Choir later sang at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Crystal and Mark Kolt, who arrived three decades ago, revived the choir, programmed touring concerts, and have spent 17 years pushing for a North Central Canada Centre of Arts and Environment — a Banff-scale idea for the boreal interior, with a 2017 feasibility study in the tens of millions.

Blueberry Jam

Blueberry Jam (7–9 August 2026) is now the North’s biggest music festival: free, family-friendly, and staged at the Flin Flon Tourist Bureau and Campground. It grew out of the Tennents Musician Reunion in Saskatchewan. In 2025 the front gates recorded 9,161 entries. Canada’s History magazine has written the town up as an “unexpected music town.” Every genre is welcome; first-timers share bills with seasoned players.

Year-round the calendar still fills: Bust the Winter Blues in February, Trout Festival on the Canada Day weekend (fish fry, derby, canoe races, fireworks), and Culture Days from late September through October.

Rooms that stay open

Johnny’s Social Club sits beside the Northern Visual Arts Centre (NorVA), an artist-run gallery. The Flin Flon Arts Council books the R.H. Channing Auditorium for choir musicals, touring Royal MTC, and local drama (Ham Sandwich Theatre). Pride’s Drag Queen Mermaid — northern Manitoba’s longest-running annual drag night — packs a music hall with local kings, queens, and monarchs.

This is the community that helped spark ImagiNorthern: arts workers here have long argued that culture is infrastructure, not a hobby bolted onto a mine.
