Thompson

Thompson is the Hub City of the North — a nickel town in the boreal forest that has spent decades painting, singing, and dancing its way into a distinct northern arts culture. Spirit Way, live rooms, choirs, and a new Afrobeats scene all sit inside the same small grid of streets.

Spirit Way and public art

Downtown Thompson is itself a gallery. Spirit Way is a walking route of murals, sculptures, and story points that starts in the core and pulls visitors toward the wolf mural on Highland Tower — still the most recognizable artwork in town. The path was built so residents and guests would meet art in ordinary places: apartment walls, trailheads, and winter sidewalks, not only inside a gallery.

Each spring the Northern Juried Art Show invites artists living north of the 53rd parallel to exhibit together. It is one of the few juried shows that treats the North as a region with its own visual language — rock, forest, aurora, industry, and Cree, Dene, and Métis making.

Music rooms and Nickel Days

Live music in Thompson has always been a mix of circuit bands, local players, and whatever can fit a tavern stage. The Regal Beagle Tavern and rooms along Public Road have hosted northern touring acts for years. In late August 2026, Afrobeat Summer Groove packed more than 150 people into the Beagle — organizers called it the largest Afrobeats live show in northern Manitoba to date, with MGL The Specialist, Northbound Revival, DJ Paris Link, and Thompson’s own Babatunde “SCUD” Adewole.

Adewole’s Afri-North Creative Incubator is a working attempt to keep that energy in town: musicians, producers, dancers, and visual artists sharing stages and skills instead of leaving for the south. The Thompson Community Band (co-directed by Sarah Lewis and Stevie MacPherson) still rehearses at 272 Thompson Drive, and Nickel Days in June fills the city with outdoor stages, food, and sport.

Studios, dance, and screens

Mall of The Arts at City Centre Mall is a warm indoor room for making and gathering when winter is long. Murcat Clay runs pottery sessions from a garage studio on Caribou Road. Aurora Dance Academy on Station Road trains young dancers. The Strand Theatre on Churchill Drive is still the movie house for Thompson and the surrounding communities.

Winterfest in February, the CHTM Trade Show’s artisan tables, and Howling Wolf Tours’ cultural outings round out a calendar that is more crowded than a one-line “vibrant arts community” ever suggested.
